Among the various types of natural hazards, ground instabilities play a major role in creating significant socio-economic and environmental threats. This session aims to discuss recent developments, methodological advances, and case studies focused on improving the assessment, understanding, and mitigation of ground instability processes and related risk. Multidisciplinary contributions that combine observations, modelling, and innovative technologies by means of multi-scale and multi-source approaches to enhance hazard and risk assessment are encouraged. Contributions addressing mass movements, subsidence, sinkholes and liquefaction and their possible chain reactions/cascade effects are welcome, with a main focus on the following topics:
- Rainfall-, seismic- and human-induced ground instabilities
- Application of AI-based approaches for hazard and risk mapping and forecasting
- In-situ and remote monitoring techniques
- Data-driven and physically based process modelling, including hybrid approaches
- Mitigation and Communication strategies, risk management and early warning systems
- Case studies and lessons learned from recent events
